The Rent Choice: Start Safely Program is a rental subsidy initiative that helps individuals and families escaping domestic or family violence to secure and maintain private rental housing. Eligible participants receive a rental subsidy for up to 36 months, with contributions starting at 25% of their income plus full Commonwealth Rent Assistance, gradually increasing over time. The program pays the remaining rent directly to the landlord or agent. To qualify, applicants must be homeless or at risk due to domestic or family violence, meet income limits, and show they can afford rent after the subsidy ends. Participants are encouraged to engage with support services to help stabilise their circumstances. Additional financial assistance may be available for education, employment, or setting up a new home. The program aims to support safety, independence, and long-term housing stability.
